GREENVILLE, Pa. – Fans wouldn't have known they were about to see a Geneva offensive explosion after a scoreless first quarter at Thiel on Saturday afternoon, but that's exactly what they got. The Golden Tornadoes scored five touchdowns in the second quarter on their way to a huge 57-20 victory over the Tomcats, Geneva's second straight victory. The total was Geneva's highest offensive output in 21 years. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 3-6 overall, 3-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Thiel dropped to 1-8, 1-6 in the PAC.
Neither team could generate much offense in the first quarter, but the Golden Tornadoes exploded in the second quarter. Senior Gino Mavero got Geneva on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run three minutes into the quarter.
The Geneva defense stuffed Thiel on a fourth-and-one on the ensuing possession, and the Golden Tornadoes converted the short field into another score, this one on a 6-yard touchdown run from Mavero, doubling the lead to 14-0.
Geneva's defense forced a three-and-out on Thiel's next drive, and on the second play of the drive, sophomore quarterback Brutus Ogilvie connected with junior Kazier Brandt on a 56-yard pass, moving the ball inside the Tomcat 2-yard line. Ogilvie rushed up the middle for another touchdown to extend the lead to 21-0.
The Golden Tornado defense forced another three-and-out, giving Geneva the ball right back, and on the first play from scrimmage Ogilvie hit freshman Logan Kent for a 68-yard touchdown down the right sideline.
Geneva finished out the scoring in the quarter, following another Thiel three-and-out, when a long run from Ogilvie set the Golden Tornadoes up inside the Thiel 5-yard line, and Ogilvie scored from two yards away to give Geneva a 34-0 lead. Junior Damian Lomeli picked off his PAC-leading sixth pass of the season on the last play of the half.
Thiel got on the board on the first drive of the second half on a long touchdown pass. On the next Tomcat possession, after a Geneva defensive stop, an errant punt snap over the punter's head went through the endzone, giving the Golden Tornadoes a safety. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Ogilvie hit junior Hilton McClain Jr. for a 42-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 43-6
Lomeli picked off his second pass of the game on Thiel's next possession, returning it to the Tomcat 11-yard line, and three plays later Brandt scored from four yards out to enable Geneva to hit 50 points.
The remaining quarter and a half was an opportunity to get playing time for everyone on the Geneva roster. Two highlights were senior Billy Perry's first career touchdown on a 4-yard rush and an interception by freshman Kiefer Mandagelo.
Geneva finished with 481 yards of total offense, including a season-best 227 yards passing. Ogilvie surpassed 1,000 passing yards on the season, the first time a Golden Tornado has thrown for that many yards since Geneva moved to the triple option attack six seasons ago. He completed just 4-of-7 passes, but those four completions went for 202 yards and two touchdowns. Brandt finished with a career-best three catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground, Ogilvie also added two scores and 57 yards rushing, while Mavero led the team with 60 yards and two touchdowns. Seven different players received carries, with the team finishing with 254 yards rushing.
Defensively, sophomore Gabe Trexler finished with a team-best eight tackles, while senior Nicolas Ottaviani added six tackles, including a TFL when he below up a reverse for 14-yard loss. Lomeli picked off two passes to bring his PAC-leading total to seven interceptions.
"Winning any PAC game on the road is never easy," said Head Coach Geno DeMarco. "We responded very well in the second quarter. We got significant contributions from both young and experienced players. Give Thiel credit for playing with great effort."
Geneva wraps up its season next Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes host Westminster for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. It will be Geneva's Senior Day.
