MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team tried to rally from a deficit in the second half at Allegheny on Wednesday night, but the Golden Tornadoes' comeback fell short, with the Gators holding on for a 2-1 victory. Geneva dropped to 3-7-2, 1-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Geneva actually controlled most of the possession in the first 30 minutes, but it didn't lead to anything. In fact, it was Allegheny who found the net twice in first 30 minutes off two counterattacks that the Gators converted into goals. Those goals accounted for the only scoring in the first half, with Geneva ending up with a 9-7 advantage in shots at the break despite the two-goal deficit.
The second half brought more of the same, with the ball more often in Allegheny's half of the field. Geneva's defense held Allegheny off the board, and the Golden Tornadoes finally broke through late with four minutes remaining. Senior Lydia Beare's (Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Christian) shot from outside the box banged off the crossbar, bouncing right to the feet of freshman Katie Browning (Orefield, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) who scored from five yards out to pull Geneva within one. However, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't find a late equalizer and fell 2-1.
Geneva finished the game with an 18-15 edge in shots, while both teams finished with nine shots on goal. The Golden Tornadoes also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Jade Farnsworth (New Brighton, Pa./Riverside) made seven saves.
The women stay on the road this weekend when Geneva heads to Grove City on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
