STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Geneva College men's soccer team saw its season come to an end in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Semifinals at Franciscan on Wednesday night.  After both teams battled to a 3-3 draw through two overtime periods, the Barons converted their first three penalty kick attempts in the shootout, while the Golden Tornadoes missed all three of their chances.  Franciscan advances to take on Bethany in the PAC Championship, while Geneva's season ends with a 10-3-7 record.

Geneva was the better team in the first half.  The Golden Tornadoes controlled much of the period, and freshman
Gabe Singh got Geneva on the board with a beautiful curling kick from the edge of the box that hit off the inside of the far post and went into the net in the 33
rd minute.  The Golden Tornadoes doubled their lead seven minutes later when sophomore
Caleb Chambers was taken down in the box, and freshman
Wil Dunda converted the penalty kick to give Geneva a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Franciscan was the better team in the second half, though, as the Barons controlled much of the second period.  The Barons scored just eight minutes into the second half off a free kick just outside the box when Nick Miller took the kick quickly and found the corner of the net as Geneva was still trying to get set up.

Less than two minutes later, Franciscan tied the game off another free kick, as Liam Nagle got his head to a cross and put the ball in the net to pull the Barons level, 2-2.

The game settled down for a bit after that, and junior
Carnel Kerr put Geneva back ahead in the 62
nd minute when he beat the keeper to a loose ball at the top of the box and rolled the ball into the open net.

Franciscan really turned up the pressure in the final ten minutes, looking for the equalizer, which Jonathan Schriner provided with just four minutes remaining when he scored on a cross in the box from eight yards out, sending the game into overtime.
The Barons carried that momentum into the two overtime periods, generating most of the scoring chances, but neither team could find the net, sending the game to a penalty kick shootout.

The shootout could not have gone any worse for the Golden Tornadoes.  Franciscan converted its first three attempts, while the Golden Tornadoes missed the net on their first attempt, had their second attempt saved, and missed the net on their third attempt, ending the match and Geneva's season.

Franciscan finished the match with a 14-9 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.  The Barons also had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Franciscan will host Bethany on Saturday after the Bison upset No. 1 Grove City in another penalty kick shootout after the two teams finished their PAC Semifinal match deadlocked at 3-3.  Geneva's season wraps up in heartbreaking fashion.  The Golden Tornadoes lose four seniors but will have an otherwise strong team returning in 2023.
