MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Geneva College men's and women's track and field teams were back in action on Saturday at the Stan Romanoski Open hosted by West Virginia University, and several Golden Tornadoes turned in strong performance.
For the men, senior Dom Data (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Data ran 10.94 seconds in the 100-meters and 22.07 seconds in the 200-meters. In addition, sophomore Noah Foust Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) won the shot put with a toss of 12.97 meters, while his throw in the discus, 43.03 meters, was a personal best, placing him second.
In addition, freshman Kevin Arseneaux (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) had a strong day, finishing the 800-meters in time of 1:57 and the 1500-meters in a time of 4:12. Freshman Kyle Garman (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) picked up right where he left off in the indoor season with a jump of 12.82 meters in the triple jump. Freshman Eric Hardman (East Palestine, Ohio/East Palestine) turned in a time of 1:01.69 in the 400-meter hurdles.
The men also won the 4x100m relay with a time of 42.28 seconds. Data, junior Josh Blessing (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) and freshmen Desmond Lewis (Fort Worth, Texas/Saginaw) and Gabe Trexler (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) each ran on the relay team.
For the women, senior Jessie Taylor (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) won the 5000-meters in a time of 19:03, while junior Alexis Montgomery (Seneca, Pa./Christian Life Academy) placed second in the javelin with a toss of 32.54 meters.
In addition, junior Naomi Swartzbaugh (Spartansburg, Pa./Spartansburg) turned in a strong time of 16.82 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, while sophomore Anne Holdeman (Bloomington, Ind./Lighthouse Christian Academy) turned in a time of 1:02.28 in the 400-meter race.
The women's 4x100m relay team also turned in a good effort, finishing in 52.15 seconds, placing second. Holdeman ran on the team along with senior Brooke Waters (New Castle, Pa./Shenango), junior Elissa O'Connor (Darlington, Pa./Blackhawk) and freshman Kendall Shaporka (Grindstone, Pa./Frazier).
"We had a lot of good performances today," said Head Coach Phil Thompson. "We had a number of PRs, despite not the best of weather at times, with the wind today being a huge issue. But that didn't stop us from competing at a high level, and I'm very pleased with our effort today."
Both teams will be back in action next weekend at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
