BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's tennis team won its 2022-23 season opener on Thursday night, 5-4, in a strong match against Penn State Behrend.
"It's always helpful to start off the season with a competitive match and this one truly was," said Golden Tornadoes head coach
Mandee Craft. "We had some strong performances by veterans and newcomers alike, and we are excited about our very young team moving forward."
Junior
Ella Miller (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge) picked up two victories for Geneva. Partnered with sophomore
Cassy Kehs (Cochranville, Pa./Oxford Area), the pair won the No. 3 doubles point, 8-2. Miller earned a key point for the Golden Tornadoes at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 7-5. The singles point evened the team score at 3-3 after Geneva finished the doubles competition up 2-1.
Sophomore
Delaney Winterhalter (Carnegie, Pa./South Fayette) and freshman
CeJaelyn Perednia (Brick, N.J./Performing Arts Academy) put Geneva ahead 2-1 with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, giving the Golden Tornadoes the lead heading into the singles portion of competition.
Senior
Laura Lin Comollo (Smyrna, Dela./Polytech) took the victory at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-2, to put Geneva ahead 4-3.
Freshman
Jenna Allison (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington Area) scored the team-winning fifth point with a tough tiebreaker set at No. 5 singles. Allison won the first set 6-2, before dropping the second set 6-4. The rookie pushed through the tiebreaker set to win 10-8 to seal the victory for Geneva.
Geneva (1-0) returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. when the Golden Tornadoes host LaRoche.
