ZAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Geneva women's tennis team wrapped up non-conference play with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Muskingum this afternoon on the road. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 3-1 on the season as they bounced back from a disappointing loss to start Presidents' Athletic Conference action on Friday.
"The team really stepped up today after a very quick turnaround from yesterday's match," said Geneva head coach
Mandee Craft. "We had a lot of very well-fought matches."
Freshman
Lauren Estes and senior
Laura Lin Comollo earned three of the team's five wins. They claimed one of the two doubles points earned by the Golden Tornadoes with a tough 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore
Delaney Winterhalter and freshman
CeJaelyn Perednia picked of the No. 2 doubles point, 8-3, to give Geneva a 2-1 lead going into singles.
"Lauren and Laura Lin did especially well to pull out their doubles win."
Rookie
Jenna Allison earned the first singles point for Geneva at No. 6, 6-4, 6-0, putting the Golden Tornadoes ahead, 3-1. But Muskingum evened things up with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, 3-3.
Comollo put Geneva ahead with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles, 4-3.
The No. 1 and No. 2 matches went three sets with Muskingum taking the No. 2 point, 4-4.
Estes outlasted her opponent, 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-2, for the No. 1 singles point and to secure the team win.
Geneva continues PAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Washington & Jefferson at 7 p.m.
