NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – For the second straight game the Geneva College women's soccer team battled one of the top teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tough, but Westminster used a second-half goal to defeat the Golden Tornadoes on Wednesday night, 2-1. Geneva dropped to 4-7-1 overall, 3-3 in the PAC, while Westminster improved to 11-2, 5-1 in the PAC.
It took Westminster just over a minute to get on the board. The Titans earned a corner kick and sent a ball over the top of the Geneva defense, and Sophia Galietta was alone on the back post to score from three yards out.
The Golden Tornadoes quickly answered, courtesy of junior Saige Musser. Six minutes after Westminster scored, Musser secured a loose ball 30 yards from goal, dribbled to the left corner of the box and sent a beautiful left-footed shot over the Westminster goalie and into the net.
Junior Lillie Berryman almost broke the tie late in the first half, but her low, hard shot was saved by Westminster's keeper, keeping the game tied at 1-1 headed into the halftime break.
The Titans retook the lead midway through the second half. In the 68th minute, Mackenzie Avery intercepted a Geneva pass and struck a shot from 25 yards away into the upper corner of the net.
Geneva applied some pressure over the final ten minutes looking for the equalizer, putting three shots on goal, including one from Musser that forced a diving save in the final minute, but Westminster was able to hold on for the 2-1 victory.
Westminster finished with a 20-12 advantage in shots. Junior Jade Farnsworth made 12 saves in the game to keep the Golden Tornadoes close.
Geneva returns home for an important game this Saturday against W&J at 3:30 p.m. The women will honor their lone senior, Lydia Beare, prior to the start of the game.
