BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team celebrated Homecoming with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22) victory over visiting Franciscan on Friday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse. The win was Geneva's first in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, improving its record to 8-7 overall, 1-1 in the PAC.
The first set was tight early, but with the score even at 7-7, a kill from junior Kami Mummau kickstarted a 7-1 Golden Tornado run. Sophomore Heather Seubert followed with an ace, freshman Katie Seboe had two kills and a block, and junior Megan Veon finished off the run with a kill, 14-8. The Barons managed to cut the lead back down to two, 16-14, but two aces from Seubert and another from sophomore Emily Nelson, along with another kill from Seboe, gave Geneva set point, 24-16, and Mummau finished things off with a kill, 25-17.
Geneva opened the second set with four straight points behind the serving of Mummau, which included three straight aces from the junior. The Barons quickly tied the score up with four points of their own, and the set stayed close until three straight Geneva kills from senior Samantha Peachey, Seboe and Veon gave the Golden Tornadoes a 12-8 advantage. Franciscan quickly responded, though, and a few minutes later the Barons had pulled ahead, 17-16. The Barons eventually pushed their lead to 22-20 before the Golden Tornadoes rallied behind Mummau. She picked up a kill and an ace to tie the score, followed by a kill from senior Tess Neville. Two Baron errors finished off the set, giving Geneva a 25-22 victory.
The third set stayed tight as well. A kill from Mummau gave Geneva a brief 10-9 lead, but Franciscan responded with four straight points to retake the lead, 13-10. The Barons later extended their lead to 19-15, but Geneva had a response. A kill and a block from Mummau started a 5-1 run to pull the women even at 20-20. The teams alternated the next four points before, with the score tied 22-22, Franciscan scored the final three points to win the set, 25-22.
Mummau started the fourth set behind the service line, and the Barons struggled to get her off it. In fact, Geneva opened with eight straight points, including two more aces for Mummau, to take a huge early lead. The Golden Tornadoes extended their lead to 17-7 and looked to be in full control before Franciscan rallied. Geneva used the big lead to get several subs in, and it seemed to disrupt the women's rhythm. The Barons responded with an 11-1 run to even the score at 18-18, and a moment later Franciscan took its first lead of the set, 22-21. However, just as it appeared the match might be heading to a fifth set, Geneva reeled off the final four points. Nelson started the run with a kill, and Veon finished off the match with back-to-back kills, 25-22.
Mummau again led the offense with 13 kills, while adding a career-high seven aces. She just missed a triple-double by adding a team-best 17 digs. Veon was right behind with 12 kills, with the team hitting .168. Peachey directed the offense with 34 assists. Junior Zoe Pifer added 16 digs, while freshman Maddie Hall finished with 14 digs. Seboe had a team-best three blocks.
The women will head out on the road for the first time in PAC play when they travel to Thiel to take on the Tomcats on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
