NEWVILLE, Pa. – Sophomores Carmen Medvit and Hailey Carroll wrapped up their outstanding seasons on Saturday afternoon for the Geneva College women's cross country team by both placing in the top 100 at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship, hosted at Big Spring High School in central Pennsylvania. There were 292 women competing in the race, and Medvit, who finished 64th, and Carroll, who placed 91st, were the top two finishers of any Presidents' Athletic Conference runner.
The duo ran closely together for much of the race, as they usually do, and at the one-mile mark of the 6K race, the pair were within the top 36 runners, with the top 40 runners at the race earning All-American honors. The duo fell back a little bit over the second mile, with a large continent of runners tightly packed together.
Towards the final mile, Medvit outpaced Carroll slightly, finishing with a time of 22:12, just 20 seconds shy of a spot in the top 40. Carroll wasn't far behind, though, running across the line just 13 seconds later for a time of 22:25.
For Medvit, this was her second straight season qualifying for the NCAA Championships after becoming the first Golden Tornado to ever advance that far last season. Last year she finished in 156th place at the championships, with Medvit showing continued improvement after last year's impressive season.
The exciting thing for Geneva fans is that Medvit and Carroll are just sophomores, meaning the women's program is in great shape heading into next season. The duo will get a week off before they turn their attention to the track and field season, where both runners are also standouts. Geneva's first indoor meet is Friday, December 1, at Youngstown State.
