MEADVILLE, Pa. – For the first time in program history, the Geneva women's cross country team was crowned Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) champions, earning a dramatic share of the title alongside Washington and Jefferson College, who tied with the GTs for first place at the PAC Cross Country Championships this afternoon. Senior
Carmen Medvit highlighted the day for the women, winning the race outright after finishing second overall at the Championships two seasons ago.
W&J was the heavy favorite coming into the day, and for most outsiders, the Golden Tornadoes realistic best result would have been a second place finish. The women didn't let the results of the races over the course of this season impact their preparation for Saturday's championship, though, and in the end it proved to be a dramatic and historic day for Geneva.
It was a wild end to the race for the Golden Tornadoes, who had three runners finish in the top 10 but had to wait for several minutes after the final runners crossed the line while the officials determined final placements. Geneva and W&J each ended with 59 points, tying for first place in an unprecedented turn of events. It is the first time the PAC has had co-champions for cross country on either the men's or women's side. It look over 20 minutes for PAC administrators to carefully go over the bylaws to see if there was a tiebreaker agreed upon, and ultimately they determined both teams would be crowned co-champions, which set off a wild celebration for the women, who had just celebrated the men's title an hour earlier.
Medvit's performance was one to remember, as she finished the race in 22:32.4 to become the first Geneva woman to win a PAC Cross Country Championship. Closely behind her was fellow senior
Hailey Carroll, who took third place overall with a time of 22:40.6. Both runners received First Team All-PAC honors, as well as sophomore
Audrey McAlister, who finished seventh overall with a 24:21.8 mark.
Freshman
Nicole Ochs took fourth place for the women and 22
nd overall, running the race in 25:30.5 and barely missing out on an all-conference award. Rounding out the top five for the GTs was sophomore
Sienna Jackson, whose time of 25:44.1 was enough to take 26
th overall at the meet.
The women will have two weeks off before their next competition, which will be the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. That meet will take place on Saturday, November 15
th, in Newville, PA, with Dickinson College hosting.
