Garvin’s Record-Breaking Day Leads Men at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Graduate student Jack Garvin shattered his own indoor high jump record on Saturday afternoon at Mount Union, putting together another strong performance early in the indoor track and field season.  His record-breaking jump highlighted the day for the men at the Mount Union Toy Drive Invite, the final meet of the semester.  The men had a limited number of athletes competing at the event.

Garvin, who broke the Geneva indoor high jump record last year by clearing 1.97 meters, tied the record midway through the event by clearing the same height, and then he proceeded to clear 2.00 meters and 2.03 meters.  He was the only jumper to clear 2.03 meters, which equals the top jump of anyone in NCAA Division III coming into the day.  As the only jumper left, he had the bar set at 2.07 meters and just missed clearing that height.  His performance on Saturday also surpassed his outdoor personal best jump last season of 2.01 meters.  Garvin also ran in the 60-meter sprint, finishing as the second-best Golden Tornado runner with a time of 7.37 seconds.

Junior Desmond Lewis was Geneva's best finisher in the 60-meter sprint, finishing with a time of 7.29 seconds.  Freshman Ariel Pierre and senior Josh Haines weren't far behind with times of 7.39 and 7.40 seconds, respectively.

In the throws, senior Noah Foust led the team, finishing with a toss of 12.94 meters in the weight throw.

The track and field teams will have a break over the holidays before resuming competition on Saturday, January 13, with a meet at Muskingum.
