HIRAM, Ohio – The Geneva College women's soccer team's frustrations continued on Tuesday evening at Hiram as, despite having the better of the play for long stretches, the women couldn't find the back of the net and saw the Terriers score late to grab a 1-0 victory over the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva dropped to 1-4-1 on the season. Hiram improved to 3-2-2.
Geneva was the better team early on, and the Golden Tornadoes almost got on the board in the 16th minute off a corner kick, but senior Lydia Beare's header hit the crossbar. Midway through the half, Hiram began to gain control of the game, with several Geneva starters catching a rest on the bench. The Terriers almost scored in the 39th minute, but their shot hit the post. The teams headed into the break still scoreless.
The Golden Tornadoes came out with a fresh group of starters in the second half and dominated much of the possession early. Junior Saige Musser had a great shot from range that banged off the crossbar four minutes into the half. Sophomore Sarah Christel almost scored seven minutes later, but her shot was just tipped wide by a diving save from Hiram's keeper Skyler Huda. Geneva kept the pressure up, and five minutes later another Musser shot was just pushed wide of the net by a Huda save.
However, Hiram converted a chance against the run of play with 20 minutes left. There was some miscommunication along Geneva's backline on a looping ball into the box which allowed Hiram's Bella Simmons to get to the ball first and head a ball over the top of junior goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth and into the back of the net.
The Golden Tornadoes pushed hard over the final 20 minutes to find an equalizer, but despite getting the ball into some dangerous spots, Geneva couldn't score and suffered another frustrating 1-0 defeat.
Geneva held an 18-16 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Farnsworth made seven saves for the Golden Tornadoes, who couldn't get any of their nine shots on goal past Huda. Geneva has now outshot their opponents in every game this season, holding a 100-54 advantage in shots on the season.
Tonight's match was the last non-conference game of the season for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva opens Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday when the women host Thiel at 4:30 p.m.
