MORRISVILLE, N.Y. --- The Geneva College women's volleyball team wrapped up weekend competition by splitting their final two matches at the SUNY Morrisville Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes lost the first match of the day to Penn State Behrend, 3-1 (25-21, 26-24, 21-25, 25-18), before beating their hosts, SUNY Morrisville, 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 32-30, 25-14).
Against PSU Behrend in the first set, Geneva took its first lead at 10-9 in the midst of a 6-0 run on a
Maddie Hall service ace. Errors by the Lions built the Geneva lead to 14-9. PSUB used a 7-0 run to retake the lead 22-17 and scored three consecutive points to win the set, 25-21.
The teams battle back and forth to start the second set with seven ties over the first 18 points of the match. The Golden Tornadoes'
Savannah Byers held serve for a 5-0 run to take a 10-8 lead.
Katie Seboe had back-to-back kills late in the set to give Geneva a 24-23 lead. But PSUB scored the final three points of the set for the 26-24 win.
After PSUB took a 6-4 lead, Geneva went on a 9-1 run to take the lead 13-7.
Kami Mummau held serve for the 6-0 portion of the run, while
Destiny Pratt had two kills in the run. The Lions used a 5-0 run to close in on the Golden Tornadoes, 14-13. The teams swapped points with PSUB taking a 21-20 lead. Geneva scored the final five points, keyed by three kills by
Tess Neville to win the set 25-21.
In the fourth set, Geneva used a 7-1 run to tie the set at 15-15. PSUB then scored four straight points to take a 19-15 lead and finished up the set 25-18.
Neville led the squad with eight kills, while Mummau and Pratt recorded seven each.
Samantha Peachey recorded the most assists with 22 and added two services aces.
Zoe Pifer led the defense with 18 digs.
Geneva turned around and earned its first win of the season in the tournament closer. The Golden Tornadoes built a 10-5 lead in the first set against SUNY Morrisville. The Mustangs caught up to take a 12-10 lead. Late in the set
Megan Veon tied the set up with a kill, 24-24 before Geneva recorded two errors to drop the set 26-24.
In the second set against Morrisville, Neville put down a kill that gave Geneva a 9-5 lead after a 6-0 run. Neville recorded another kill as Geneva built the lead to 15-7. The Golden Tornadoes kept the Mustangs at arm's length as they pulled out a 25-18 win to even the match, 1-1.
Geneva took a 4-0 lead to start the third set with kills from Mummau and
Katie Seboe. The Mustangs tied the game at 11-11. The teams battled throughout the set getting to all even at 25. The set went extra points, as Geneva prevailed on a kill by Neville and a Mustang error, 32-30.
Geneva got off to a quick start again in the fourth set with a 6-1 lead as Neville held serve in a 5-0 run. The Mustangs cut Geneva's lead to 13-11. The Golden Tornadoes scored the last eight points to win the match, 25-14.
Veon led the team with 14 kills and two blocks, while Neville recorded 12 kills and served three aces.
Destiny Pratt contributed 10 kills and Mummau served five aces. Peachey assisted 40 kills and Pifer led the defense with 16 digs.
Geneva returns to action on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 p.m. against Mount Aloysius on the road. The junior varsity match will follow shortly after the varsity match.
