Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women Shut Out Bethany to Earn Second Straight PAC Victory

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Geneva College women's soccer team put together a strong performance at Bethany on Tuesday afternoon, shutting down the Bison offense and using second-half goals from freshman Abby Stover and junior Saige Musser to leave town with a 2-0 victory.  The win is the second in a row to open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play for the Golden Tornadoes and improved their overall record to 3-4-1.

Geneva almost got on the board in the first five minutes when a loose ball landed at the feet of Stover.  Her shot deflected off a defender and appeared headed into the goal before it was cleared off the line by another Bison defender.  The Golden Tornadoes again had a near miss with eight minutes remaining in the half when junior Julia Robertson collected a rebound off a shot from junior Lillie Berryman, but her shot was deflected wide by the goalie.

It didn't take long for the ladies to get on the board in the second half, though.  In fact, it took all of 29 seconds.  Junior Olivia Anson stole a ball near midfield and sent a beautiful ball in behind the defense.  Stover ran onto the ball and hit a shot from the corner of the box over the oncoming Bethany goalie and into the net.  It was her first career goal.

The women doubled their lead just four minutes later.  Musser beat a Bethany defender to a loose ball at the top of the box, and she took one touch before slotting a ball inside the far post to quickly give the Golden Tornadoes a 2-0 advantage.

The Geneva defense took things from there, with the backline of junior Addie Tallman, sophomores Emily Garvin and Olivia Martin, and freshman Noelle Beare keeping the Bison from generating any good chances, allowing junior goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth to pick up her second straight shutout.

Geneva finished with a 9-4 advantage in shots, with the ladies now having outshot all eight of their opponents so far this season.  The Golden Tornadoes also had a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.  Farnsworth made three saves.

The Golden Tornadoes head to Saint Vincent on Saturday looking for their third straight victory to open PAC play.  The women have won their first two conference games for the first time since 2018, and they've never won their first three PAC games since joining the conference in 2011.  The kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m.
