BETHANY, W.Va. – Senior
Carnel Kerr's second-half goal at Bethany on Wednesday afternoon gave the Golden Tornadoes an important road victory against the Bison, 1-0. Geneva has now won its first two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games of the year, improving the men's overall record to 5-4-1.
The first half was a fairly even affair, with neither team unable to generate much of a quality chance on goal. The game was played mostly in the middle of the field as both squads' defenses held firm.
Geneva came out in the second half, though, with some sustained pressure. Nine minutes into the half, sophomore
Mike Rogers' header off a corner kick hit the post. A minute later, Kerr's shot from the top of the box was just pushed over the bar.
In the 58
th minute, the Golden Tornadoes broke through with a beautiful sequence of soccer. Junior
Darren Main switched fields on a long ball, which freshman
Ojha Ojha headed down at the edge of the box to sophomore
Wil Dunda, and Dunda quickly passed the ball to Kerr in the center of the box. Kerr shielded his defender from the ball, spun to his right and hit a left-footed shot across the keeper and inside the far post. It was a well-deserved goal after almost 15 minutes of sustained pressure.
The Geneva defense did the rest from there. The Golden Tornadoes never gave the Bison a decent chance the rest of the game, and Geneva earned its second straight shutout, 1-0.
Geneva finished with big advantage in shots, 13-4, and shots on goal, 6-2. The men also had a huge edge in corner kicks, 10-2. Junior goalkeeper
Evan Shale made two saves to earn another shutout.
The men will try to keep their winning streak going when they travel to Saint Vincent on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. match with the Bearcats.
