Women’s Volleyball Can’t Find Rhythm Versus Wooster

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Wooster Fighting Scots got out to an early lead over Geneva's women's volleyball team on Tuesday evening, and the Golden Tornadoes could not get things going offensively as the match went on. They eventually fell in three sets, 20-25, 20-25, 19-25. After the loss Geneva's record falls to 7-10 overall, with the team set to begin Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Friday.

Wooster scored the first three points of the night in set number one, but the score was evened up after junior Emily Nelson recorded a kill and two aces. The Fighting Scots took off from that point onward, however, orchestrating a 10-2 run that put Geneva in a deep hole. The women rallied to bring the score within three, with a kill from senior Megan Veon making it 23-20, but Wooster scored the next two points to take the first set 25-20.

Geneva kept the score closer to start the second set, with the scoreboard reading 10-9 in favor of the Fighting Scots midway through the frame. Wooster managed to slowly build the lead over the next few points, however, and ended up winning the set 25-20 once again.

Finally, it was Geneva's turn to jump out to a lead, as a 4-0 run fueled by some solid play from Veon and graduate student Savannah Byers put the women in front 7-4. Unfortunately, that lead was short-lived as Wooster put together an 8-1 run to regain command of the match. A kill from sophomore Katie Seboe midway through the set cut the Scots' lead to 19-17, but Wooster finished on a 6-2  run to win the third and final set 25-19.

Nelson and Veon led the women offensively, posting 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Byers had 15 assists, and freshman Laura Goonewardene put up 9 assists of her own after getting some extended run time in the second and third sets. Junior Heather Seubert recorded a game-high 15 digs.

The women begin PAC play this Friday, October 4th, when they travel to Allegheny for a 6:00 PM match against a tough Gators squad. After that, the GTs will return home for a match with Waynesburg next Wednesday, October 9th.
