MEADVILLE, Pa. – Women's volleyball opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play today against the Allegheny Gators, who came into the match as the team with the best overall record in the PAC. Unfortunately, the women struggled to build any momentum throughout the match and lost in three sets (13-25, 16-25, 17-25). The Golden Tornadoes now stand at 7-11 overall, 0-1 in conference play, while Allegheny moves to 15-4, 2-0 in the PAC.
Allegheny started off strong in the first set, taking a very quick 7-2 lead. The Golden Tornadoes fought to stay in it, getting a nice block from junior
Emily Nelson and sophomore
Katie Seboe to keep the deficit at five midway through the frame, 14-9. Unfortunately, Allegheny won five points in row after that to take command, and they eventually won the set 25-13.
Senior
Megan Veon began the second set on a hot streak, getting three quick kills to give the women a 6-3 advantage early on. The Gators quickly came back to tie the score, but back-to-back aces from Nelson put the GTs back in front 10-6. That would be where the momentum ended for Geneva though, as Allegheny outscored the Golden Tornadoes 19-6 from that point onward to take the set 25-16.
The Gators finally began to make a few mistakes at the outset of the third set, and the GTs took advantage and built up an 8-2 lead. Once again, Allegheny stormed back by way of seven unanswered points to gain a slight edge. That stretch ended up being part of a larger 17-3 run that gave the Gators complete control, and Geneva dropped the third set 25-17.
Nelson had a team-high seven kills and three aces in the loss. Graduate student
Savannah Byers paced the women with ten assists, and junior
Heather Seubert led the way defensively with 15 digs.
The Golden Tornadoes return home next Wednesday, October 9
th, for a 7:00 PM match against Waynesburg.
