BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva's women's soccer team played an excellent first half on Saturday against Bethany, but two second half goals from the Bison proved to be the difference in the GTs' 2-0 loss. The women had a few opportunities early but could not convert them into goals. Their record now stands at 1-11-1 overall, 0-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Bethany moves up to 6-4-3 overall, 3-2-1 in conference play.
Just before the match began, 11 players from the Golden Tornadoes' squad were acknowledged for their contributions to the team during their time at Geneva. This senior class is the largest the women's team has had in recent memory, which made it a special occasion for the GTs.
Jade Farnsworth,
Olivia Anson,
Emma Daku-Treas,
Tori Fregm,
Saige Musser,
Lillie Berryman,
Jenna Hartman,
Julia Robertson,
Addie Tallman,
Sydney Marchand, and
Sydney Willig were all recognized.
After the Senior Day celebration the women started the match off well. They generated four shots in the first 15 minutes, including one on goal from Musser, and appeared to be dictating the pace of play. Anson put another shot on goal in the 21
st minute, and then the GTs had a brilliant opportunity just a minute later in which a loose ball appeared to be heading into the Bison goal before it was unfortunately deflected wide by a Geneva leg. Berryman placed one more shot on target before the half ended, but despite the women's solid play the score remained 0-0.
Bethany came out very hot in the second half, and it seemed almost inevitable after the first five minutes of the frame that a goal would be coming soon. Indeed, the Bison scored in the 53
rd minute courtesy of Monica Bird, and they did not look back. Bird knocked one more into the back of the net to seal the deal in the 61
st minute, and the final result was 2-0 in favor of the visitors.
The Bison outshot Geneva 17-11, which included a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Musser took five total shots for the GTs, putting two of them on target. Farnsworth got the start in goal and made three saves.
Coming up next week, the women look to break their losing streak when they play Thiel on Wednesday, October 16
th. That match is scheduled to kick off at 5:00 PM.
