Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Main Delivers Late Game-Winner at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. – A week after his older brother Darren Main delivered a late game-winner for the Geneva College men's soccer team against Saint Vincent, freshman Luke Main followed suit with a late goal on Wednesday night at Thiel to give the Golden Tornadoes a 1-0 victory over the Tomcats.  It's Geneva's fourth 1-0 victory in five matches and the men's school-record 10th straight shutout.  The Golden Tornadoes remain undefeated on the season, improving their record to 11-0-3 overall, 5-0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.  This is now the best start in school history, besting the 1997 team that started the year 12-2.

It hasn't been easy in recent weeks for the Geneva College men's soccer team, despite its undefeated record, but one thing that has been consistent every match has been an elite defense, and that standout defense delivered again on Wednesday night in completely shutting down the Thiel offense.  However, neither team could generate much offense in the first half.  Geneva controlled most of the possession, but the Golden Tornadoes generated just two shots in the first period, one on goal.

Geneva's offense slowly began to get in gear in the second half, putting more pressure on the Tomcat goal as the men searched for the game-winner.  The Golden Tornadoes finally broke through in the 80th minute.  Geneva earned a free kick about 40 yards from the goal, one of Thiel's 19 fouls in the match.  Junior Wil Dunda sent a beautiful ball into the box which Main got on the end of, and Main headed a shot inside the near post sending the Golden Tornadoes on to victory, 1-0.

Geneva's defense did accomplish something it hadn't done this year in not allowing a single shot by the Tomcats.  It's the sixth time this year the men haven't allowed a shot on goal.  Geneva's offense finished with 12 total shots, eight on frame.  Senior Evan Shale got the start in goal and earned his first shutout of the season.

The men will have a well-deserved weekend off before returning to action next Wednesday when the Golden Tornadoes host Chatham at 7:00 p.m.
