Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Can’t Hold Early Lead in Draw with Chatham

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team did something it hadn't done in a couple weeks when the Golden Tornadoes received an early goal from junior Wil Dunda against Chatham on Wednesday night.  Unfortunately, the men did something they hadn't done in over a month in allowing an equalizing goal in the closing seconds of the first half after an hour lightning delay, ending a streak of ten straight shutouts, and the Golden Tornadoes couldn't find the winner in the second half and settled for a 1-1 draw with the Cougars.  Geneva does remain undefeated on the season and now sits at 11-0-4 overall, 5-0-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).

Geneva could not have asked for a better start.  The Golden Tornadoes got on the board early, just four minutes into the game, when Dunda received a pass from junior George Cottenden 25 yards from net and sent a beautiful left-footed strike into the upper corner.  It was exactly the type of start Geneva was looking for after struggling to find goals since conference play started.

Chatham responded well, though, after Geneva's early goal, and had a couple of dangerous moments over the next ten minutes that the Golden Tornadoes managed to just keep out of the net.  Just over halfway through the first half, a thunderstorm rolled through Beaver Falls, forcing both teams into the locker room for over an hour delay before play was allowed to restart.

Geneva came out the better team after the long delay and had multiple chances to double its lead.  Senior Caleb Chambers hit the crossbar on a short chance in the 29th minute, and two minutes later, senior Carnel Kerr appeared to have doubled Geneva's lead with a goal.  However, the goal was ruled off because the center referee felt Chatham's goalie, Maxwell Cottrill, had control of the ball on the ground before Kerr poked it in.

Geneva was still in great position to head to halftime with a lead before a defensive mistake near midfield allowed Chatham a counterattack opportunity with just over 20 seconds remaining, and the Cougars converted off a deflected cross when Azavier Coppin, one of the top goal-scorers in the PAC, scored with 12 seconds left.

Geneva opened the second half with the better of the play, but despite several shots, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't put very many on frame.  Chatham waited for counterattack chances, which the Cougars found a couple of going through Coppin, but it was the strong defending of junior center back Noah Dworakowski on Coppin that didn't allow Chatham to convert.

Geneva almost got a gift in the final minute when a Chatham pass back to Cottrill, who was 20 yards away from his net, was errant and went heading towards the Cougar net.  Cottrill sprinted back and dove to knock the ball wide of the net before it crossed the goal line, but because he touched the ball with his hand on the pass back to him, Geneva was given an indirect free kick from the six-yard box with 30 seconds remaining.  Chatham put its entire team shoulder-to-shoulder on the goal line to defend the free kick, and despite three Geneva shots in the final moments as the ball bounced off multiple Chatham players, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't sneak one into the net and settled for the 1-1 draw.

Geneva, as it has done all year, held a sizable 19-9 edge in shots, but the Golden Tornadoes couldn't put enough shots on net as the two teams both finished with four shots on goal.  Geneva also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Geneva still controls its own destiny for the top seed for the upcoming PAC playoffs, but the Golden Tornadoes will need to likely win both of its remaining games to secure the top spot.  Geneva will head to Waynesburg on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. match against a Yellow Jackets squad that is currently in position to qualify for the PAC playoffs.  The men then finish the regular season with a home match next Wednesday against Franciscan, who is currently ahead of Geneva in the PAC standings.
