Women’s Volleyball Falls to Grove City

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision to Grove City on Wednesday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse 24-26, 16-25, 16-25.  The women are now 9-13 on the season, 1-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Grove City used an 8-1 run early in the first set to grab a 9-4 edge, forcing the Golden Tornadoes to play from behind.  The Wolverines eventually stretched their lead to 21-13 before Geneva rallied behind the serving of freshman Laura Goonewardene.  The women scored eight straight points, with senior Megan Veon and freshman Katie Seboe each contributing two kills in the run.  Geneva could never retake the lead, though.  A couple minutes later, a kill from junior Emily Nelson pulled the women level again at 24-24, but Grove City scored the final two points to win 26-24.

Geneva had the better of the play early in the second set, eventually building a 14-11 lead after another kill from Nelson.  Unfortunately, the bottom fell out from that point as Grove City scored the next 12 points on its way to a 25-16 win in the second set.

Grove City jumped ahead in the third set, using a 10-3 run to grab a 13-7 lead, and the Wolverines eventually stretched their lead to 18-9, with Grove City eventually finishing off the match with a 25-16 win.

Veon led the women with ten kills, Seboe added nine kills and Nelson eight kills in the match.  Nelson also totaled 20 digs, while senior Zoe Pifer added ten digs.  Goonewardene directed the offense with 21 assists.

Geneva will return to action on Saturday when the women travel to Westminster for a 6:00 p.m. match.  The contest begin a stretch of four straight matches on the road for the Golden Tornadoes.
