Grove City, Pa. – Geneva's men's soccer team had not beaten Grove City on the road since 2015, but they did it Wednesday night, 1-0, thanks to a first-half goal from junior
Wil Dunda. The GTs' defense remained stout, achieving their sixth straight shutout and third to start Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. With the win, Geneva moves to 8-0-2 on the season, 2-0-1 in the conference, while Grove City drops to 5-2-2 overall and 2-1 in the PAC after suffering its first conference loss. The victory gives Geneva a distinct advantage in the race for the top seed in the PAC playoffs.
The men started the first half in control, dictating the pace of play for the majority of first 20 minutes. However, neither side was able to conjure up many scoring opportunities, with no shots on goal coming from either team through the first 30 minutes. That changed when senior
Kyle Lapoure made a run into the right side of the box midway through the half and played a perfectly placed pass on the ground to Dunda. Dunda calmly put the shot into the top half of the net to put the men in front, giving them a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the night.
Lapoure had a chance of his own early in the second half, but his shot in the 49
th minute was saved by the Grove City keeper. Geneva's defense was very tight throughout the half, and Grove City struggled to create opportunities on the offensive end as the match went on. The Wolverines managed to put a shot on target in the waning minutes of the match, but senior
Haydn Catalon made the save to keep the Golden Tornadoes in front. When the final whistle blew, the GTs had their first victory at Grove City in nine years.
The Wolverines had a slight advantage in shots over the men, taking nine compared to Geneva's six. Each side managed to put three shots on target, with Catalon saving all three for the Golden Tornadoes.
The men will look to remain undefeated when they travel up to Allegheny for their next match on Saturday, October 5
th. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
