MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva men's soccer team appeared to be headed for a scoreless draw at Allegheny on Saturday afternoon before junior
Mike Rogers' header with four minutes left found the back of the net, allowing the Golden Tornadoes to defeat the Gators, 1-0, while extending their impressive shutout streak to seven matches. Geneva remains undefeated and improved to 9-0-2 on the season, 3-0-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
Allegheny hosted the game on its grass field, and the slower turf was apparent as neither team could generate many chances in the first half. While Geneva had more of the possession in the initial period, it was the Gators that had the most dangerous shot, forcing senior goalkeeper
Haydn Catalon to make a diving save to keep Allegheny off the board. The game went into the half still scoreless.
Geneva dominated the second half, as Allegheny seemed content to stay deep in its defensive shell waiting for a counter-attack opportunity. The Golden Tornadoes almost broke through midway through the half, but Allegheny's keeper made a diving save on a shot from junior
Noah Dworakowski that appeared to be heading into the goal. Ten minutes later, senior
Caleb Chambers made a great dribbling run through the center of the Gator defense, laying the ball off to junior
George Cottenden for an open look from ten yards away, but Cottenden got under his shot and sent the ball over the bar.
As the game clock got later and later, Allegheny really bunkered in, and it looked like the game would end in a scoreless draw. However, Geneva earned a corner kick with just over four minutes remaining. Junior
Wil Dunda sent the kick to the far post where Rogers what waiting, and Rogers rocketed his header into the back of the net to give Geneva the lead. The Golden Tornadoes saw the game out from there for the 1-0 victory.
Geneva finished the game with a 12-7 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Catalon saved all three shots to earn his eighth shutout of the season.
After opening with three of their first four conference games on the road, the men will play twice this coming week at home. Geneva will host Saint Vincent on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m., and the Golden Tornadoes will wrap up their week with a home match against Bethany next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Geneva will honor its seniors prior to the Bethany match.
