Women’s Tennis Battles Against Saint Vincent

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva's women's tennis team played an excellent match on Wednesday evening, going the distance with Saint Vincent College, but the Golden Tornadoes came up just short in a 4-3 loss to the Bearcats. The match came down to the final contest of the evening as the women played some of their best tennis of the year. The loss drops Geneva to 5-5 on the season, while Saint Vincent climbs up to 9-2.

The women began the evening well, taking two of the three doubles matches to win the point. Freshman Chloe DeSanzo and junior Lauren Estes battled to a 7-5 win in the top doubles flight, while junior Delaney Winterhalter and sophomore Rachel Hodsden claimed a 6-2 victory in the No. 2 doubles spot.

Estes and Hodsden ended up being the ones to grab up Geneva's two singles victories as well. Estes handled her competition easily, winning the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-1, while Hodsden got the victory in the No. 4 spot 6-4, 6-4. DeSanzo played an excellent match in the top singles flight as well, almost taking down Saint Vincent's undefeated No. 1 player, but she wound up losing in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 5-7).

"This is by far the closest we've been to beating Saint Vincent in three years," said Head Coach Mandee Craft after the match. "We are definitely approaching our best tennis. It's tough to walk away from a match like this on the losing end, but we fought hard today."

The women play again in just two days, when they head to Waynesburg for a 5:00 PM match with the Yellow Jackets.
