WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Geneva's women's tennis team got their first win in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play this season by sweeping Waynesburg on the road Friday evening. The win keeps the GTs' playoff hopes alive with two matches to play. Their record gets boosted to 6-5 overall, 1-5 in the PAC, while Waynesburg falls to 1-8, 0-6 in conference play.
The women started off strong in doubles play, cruising to victories in all three matchups. Freshman
Chloe DeSanzo and junior
Lauren Estes won the No. 1 doubles match 6-0, while senior
Delaney Winterhalter and sophomore
Rachel Hodsden took the No. 2 match 6-1. Junior
CeJaelyn Perednia and sophomore
Caroline Reed finished off the doubles contests with a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot.
Continuing in her season-long pattern of excellence, DeSanzo began singles play by sweeping her opponent in straight sets. Estes only dropped one point in the second flight, winning her match 6-0, 6-1, while Winterhalter narrowly avoided going to a third set in the No. 3 spot, snagging the victory 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). Junior
Jenna Allison took the No. 4 singles match handily, winning it 6-2, 6-1, while Perednia and Reed finished out the evening with victories in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
Head Coach
Mandee Craft was quite happy with her team after their performance. "Great win tonight for everyone," she said. "It always helps to start out strong in doubles, and we were able to continue from there."
The women have two matches remaining in their fall schedule, needing wins in both contests to have a shot at qualifying for the PAC playoffs. They head to Franciscan on Monday, October 7
th for a 5:00 PM tilt with the Barons before returning home to play Thiel on Wednesday, October 9
th.
