STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Women's tennis needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive this evening against Franciscan, but the Barons proved to be too much for Geneva and the Golden Tornadoes fell 6-1. With one match left to play, the women's record now sits at 6-6 overall, 1-6 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play. Franciscan's win clinches a playoff spot for Barons and pushes their record up to 8-2 overall, 4-2 in the PAC.
Freshman
Chloe DeSanzo and junior
Lauren Estes got a 6-4 victory in No. 1 doubles to get things started off well for the women, but the GTs dropped the other two doubles matches, losing the point to Franciscan as a result. Needing a strong performance in singles play to take the match, the Franciscan matchups proved to be too much for Geneva. Sophomore
Rachel Hodsden was the only player who managed to win her individual match, beating the Barons No. 4 player 6-1, 7-5. The win was Hodsden's fourth straight singles victory.
"Losing the doubles point really hurt us today," said Geneva head coach
Mandee Craft after the match. "We just weren't able to recover and find four singles points to win."
The women look to wrap up their season this Wednesday, October 9
th, when they take on Thiel College. They will celebrate the team's two seniors,
Abby Kehs and
Delaney Winterhalter, before the match begins at 6:30 PM.
