BETHANY, W. Va. – It was yet another tightly-contested match for Geneva's women's volleyball team Wednesday night, but the Golden Tornadoes dropped their game against Bethany in four sets (26-28, 20-25, 25-22, 20-25). The teams have now split their results in the two matches they've played against each other this season, as Geneva swept the Bison earlier in the semester. The women's record now stands at 9-17 overall, 1-6 in conference play, while Bethany moves to 8-17, 1-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
Two aces by graduate student
Savannah Byers knotted the score at 4-4 early in the first set, but Bethany used an 11-2 run to take a commanding lead midway through the frame. The women responded with a 5-1 run of their own, but five straight Bison points gave the home team a commanding 21-11 advantage. Geneva stormed back by way of a 10-1 run thanks to three kills from junior
Emily Nelson, and the GTs even took a brief 24-23 lead on a kill by sophomore
Katie Seboe, but the Bison weathered the storm and won the set 28-26.
The two sides battled back and forth in set two, but Bethany maintained a narrow advantage the entire time. There were several moments where it seemed the GTs were about to make a run, but each time their momentum was stopped by the Bison. Bethany won the set 25-20.
Finally, Geneva took an early lead in the third set, going in front 7-2 on the back of three more Nelson kills. Bethany kept the score close, however, and ended up jumping back in front 17-13 midway through the frame. Down five a few points later, Nelson, Byers, and senior
Megan Veon used a combination of aces and kills to take a one point lead, 21-20, and the women held on to win it 25-22.
Junior
Heather Seubert landed two aces and Veon had another kill to give the Golden Tornadoes a 6-3 lead early in set four. The GTs continued to build their lead, with a kill by graduate student
Destiny Pratt putting the women in front 10-4. Slowly but steadily, Bethany worked its way back into the set, using an 11-3 run at one point to take a 23-19 lead. They held on to win the set 25-20, and the overall match three sets to one.
Nelson led the way offensively for the women with 16 kills, and she also recorded 13 digs. Veon was right behind her with 14 kills, getting 13 digs of her own. Byers posted a team-high 34 assists and four aces, and Seubert led the defense with 24 digs.
With three matches remaining, the Golden Tornadoes are looking forward to heading back home after a four-game stretch on the road. They will face off against Thiel this Saturday, November 2
nd, in Metheny Fieldhouse at 3:00 PM.
