Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women Fight Hard on Senior Day but Lose to Thiel in Four

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva's women's volleyball team acknowledged their three seniors, Megan Veon, Zoe Pifer, and Kennedi Stockey, before Saturday's match against Thiel, but wound up losing the game in four sets (21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 21-25). Thiel came into the match as one of the better teams in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), but despite the difference in the records of the two teams the Golden Tornadoes held their own and played the Tomcats well. Unfortunately, the loss dropped the women to 9-18 overall, 1-7 in the PAC, while Thiel's record moves up to 17-6, 5-3 in conference play.

The two sides battled back-and-forth early in the first set, with neither team able to gain much of an advantage until a 4-0 Thiel run put the visitors up 16-11. Geneva came right back to cut the deficit to one, but the women could not take back the lead before the set ended and lost it 25-21.

Again, the second set began very closely, but this time it was the GTs' turn to gain a slight edge, using two kills from junior Emily Nelson to take a 10-7 lead. Points were traded between the sides over the next several minutes, with neither team taking more than a two point lead until the very end of the set when the Tomcats finished on a five-point run to win 25-22.

The Golden Tornadoes got five straight points of their own to begin set number three, thanks to a kill and an ace by junior Heather Seubert. Thiel stormed back to back to make it close midway through the set, but the visitors got sloppy toward the end and Geneva took advantage by way of a 6-0 run, leading to a 25-17 set victory.

Thiel got out to a 6-3 lead to start the fourth set, and unfortunately the GTs were not able to respond. Several times throughout the frame the women came back to make the score close, but the Tomcats were in control almost the entire way to win set four 25-21, and the overall match three sets to one.

Once again, Nelson had an excellent game for the women, leading them in kills with 14 while also contributing 18 digs. Veon recorded 11 kills of her own, blocking 10 shots throughout the match as well. Graduate student Savannah Byers posted a team-high 30 assists, while Seubert again led the team in digs with 28. Sophomore Gracyn Lee also contributed 10 blocks defensively.

The women play twice more before the season ends, heading to Saint Vincent on Wednesday, November 6th for a 7:00 PM match before finishing up the year at home with a match against Washington and Jefferson the following Friday.
