Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women’s Volleyball Can’t Get Past Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. – It was another difficult night for women's volleyball against Saint Vincent, as the GTs dropped their match to the Bearcats in three sets. Saint Vincent has been playing very good volleyball since the start of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, and Wednesday night was no different, as Geneva lost to them 21-25, 19-25, 20-25. The women's record now stands at 9-19 overall, 1-8 in PAC play, while the Bearcats' record continues to climb, now up to 13-11 overall, 7-2 in the PAC.

Saint Vincent jumped in front to begin the match, but an ace by senior Megan Veon kept Geneva close at 8-7. The GTs continued to battle through the rest of the set, getting some quality play from freshman setter Laura Goonewardene, but despite a late run of four straight points they lost the first set 25-21.

The Bearcats jumped out to a 4-0 advantage to open the second set, but Geneva stormed right back to take a 9-8 lead by way of a couple kills from sophomore Daphne Alexander and junior Emily Nelson. In fact, Nelson went on a brief 4-1 run of her own where she recorded four kills mid-set. The women used that momentum to their advantage, creeping in front 14-11, but Saint Vincent seized control just a few minutes later and ended the set by scoring seven consecutive points to win it 25-19.

There was not much to separate the two sides at the beginning of set number three, with Geneva leading 11-10 midway through the frame. A 9-1 run from Saint Vincent, however, put the home side in a commanding position, and despite a last-gasp effort from the Golden Tornadoes that cut the deficit to two points near the end, the Bearcats won the set 25-20, and the overall match three sets to none.

Veon and Nelson each posted double-digit kills in the loss, contributing 13 and 11, respectively. Goonewardene and graduate student Savannah Byers split the setting duties, with the latter gaining a 17-15 edge in assists. Junior Heather Seubert recorded a game-high 29 digs.

Geneva has just one game remaining on its schedule, a home tilt against Washington and Jefferson this Friday, November 8th, at 7:00 PM.
