Women’s Soccer Battles in Narrow Loss to Saint Vincent

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva opened its match with Saint Vincent well, playing the Bearcats to a scoreless draw at the half, but the women allowed two second half goals in a 2-0 loss. The scoreboard did not reflect how closely the GTs played the Bearcats, as both teams' stats looked very similar in the box score and Geneva put together a couple of nice attacking plays that could have been goals with one extra touch. With the loss, the Golden Tornadoes' record falls to 1-10-1, 0-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent rises to 10-1-1, including a perfect 4-0 in PAC play.

The women began the first half with their strongest start to a match in the past few games, placing two shots on goal within the first four minutes. Senior Saige Musser sent a shot in from 25 yards out that was fielded on a hop by the Saint Vincent goalkeeper, and then Noelle Beare placed a free kick on target just a couple of minutes afterward. The Golden Tornadoes' attack slowed down at that point, but they managed to play a very even half the rest of the way against the Bearcats, and the score was tied 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.

The second half began with a couple more early shots from the GTs, but things took a turn for the worse immediately afterward. The women committed a foul inside their own penalty box in the 52nd minute, which resulted in a penalty kick for Saint Vincent that they made to put them in front 1-0. Geneva had its best chance of the night in the 72nd minute when Musser lasered a free kick in from about 25 yards out that popped off the crossbar and back into the field of play, keeping the GTs scoreless. Saint Vincent scored once more one a well-executed corner kick play to finish the game with a 2-0 win.

Geneva had a 12-11 advantage in total shots in the loss, while the Bearcats had a slim edge in shots on goal, 5-4. Three of Geneva's shots on goal came off the foot of Musser. Senior Lillie Berryman got her second straight start in goal, saving three shots.

After facing the top four teams in the PAC in their last four games, the women will have an opportunity to rebound against Bethany College this upcoming Saturday, October 12th. The match will kick off at 4:00 PM following the Senior Day celebration, in which the GTs will recognize the ten seniors on their roster.
