Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. – The Geneva College men's and women's track and field teams finally got a chance open their outdoor season with a meet at Bethany on Saturday, after most of their first meet at Coastal Carolina over Spring Break got rained out.

Sophomore Hailey Carroll was one highlight for the Golden Tornadoes.  She won the 800-meter race by almost eight seconds, finishing in a school record time of 2:16.91.  The women were also glad to get sophomore Carmen Medvit back after she missed the indoor season while returning from an injury, and she won the 5000-meter race with a time of 18:14.12

On the men's side, sophomore Karter Reath also brought home a first-place finish, winning the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:52.24, while senior Catherine O'Donnell placed third on the women's side of the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:50.18.

Geneva's other first-place finish in the meet came from the men's 4x100m relay team that finished in a time of 43.57 seconds.  Sophomore Seth Tyson, graduate student Jack Garvin, along with juniors Gabe Trexler and Desmond Lewis, ran the four legs of the relay.

Garvin also finished second in the high jump by clearing 1.90 meters.  On the women's side of the jumps, sophomore Emma Parnell placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.53 meters, while placing seventh in the long jump with an effort of 4.82 meters.

For the men, Lewis also brought home a second-place finish in the 200-meters, finishing in a time of 22.59 seconds.  Junior Brian Cline ran a strong race in the 400-meter hurdles, placing third with a time of 59.97 seconds.

For the women, junior Madison Castro ran well in the 1500-meter race, finishing third with a time of 5:03.81.  Sophomore Emily Garvin finished third in the javelin with a toss of 34.08 meters, while junior Aliyah Hillman placed fourth in the pole vault by clearing 2.60 meters.

Geneva will be back in action next week when the men and women travel to West Virginia on Saturday for a meet.
