MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The elements were not ideal for the Geneva College men's and women's track team as the Golden Tornadoes competed at the West Virginia Stan Romanoski Open on Saturday afternoon. Temperatures were in the mid-30s with gusts of wind, causing a number of student-athletes to scratch, but one highlight was junior Kevin Arseneaux defeating a number of Division I runners to win the 800-meter race.
Arseneaux defeated almost 60 runners in six heats to finish with the top time of 1:54.18 in the 800-meters, despite the tough conditions.
The men's 4x100m relay team again ran well, placing second with a time of 43.62 seconds. Graduate student Jack Garvin, juniors Gabe Trexler and Desmond Lewis, and sophomore Seth Tyson ran the four legs for the Golden Tornadoes.
Other strong finishers for the men included senior Noah Foust placing third in the discus with a toss of 42.43 meters, junior Brian Cline placing sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.25, and Garvin, who placed third in the javelin with a throw of 46.71 meters and 8th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.25 seconds.
Sophomore Emily Garvin was the top finisher for the women, placing sixth in the javelin with a throw of 35.01 meters. Sophomore Hailey Carroll placed seventh in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:20.47, while junior Aliyah Hillman added a 9th-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 2.60 meters.
The men and women will hope for better conditions next week as a few competitors will head to West Liberty for a meet on Saturday, while some of the team will take the weekend off over Easter Break.
