Baseball Drops a Pair at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team suffered a pair of losses at Grove City on Tuesday afternoon, falling by scores of 5-3 and 12-2 in the doubleheader.  Geneva is now 11-11 on the season, 3-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Sophomore Jacob McFarland got the start on the mound in game one of the doubleheader, and the Wolverines struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Grove City then added single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Geneva's offense stirred to life in the top of the sixth.  Junior Zack Sackett and sophomore Kirk Bearjar singled to open the inning.  Junior Zach Lemansky followed with a walk to load the bases.   Freshman Bradley McGuire drove in two runs with a double, and sophomore Aaron Babu drove home Geneva's third run with a sacrifice fly.

Unfortunately, Geneva could get no closer.  Grove City added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh and took the game, 5-3.

McGuire had two of Geneva's five hits in game one.

Sophomore Eric Keaton got the start in game two, and Grove City jumped out quickly with three runs in the first, but Keaton quickly found a groove after the bumpy first inning.

Geneva answered in the top of the second.  Bearjar led off with a single, and two batters later McGuire sent a drive over the left field fence for a two-run home run.

Keaton kept the Wolverine offense at bay until he started to tire in the sixth, and Grove City tacked on two runs in the process.  Senior Joshua Kearns relieved Keaton and limited the damage.

However, Grove City put the game away in the following inning, scoring six times, and the Wolverines scored once more in the eighth for the 12-2 win.

Geneva managed just three hits against Wolverine pitching in game two.

The Golden Tornadoes will try to rebound tomorrow when they host Penn State New Kensington for a single game at 4:00 p.m.  The plan is to finish their suspended game from last month at 3:00 p.m. before starting their regularly scheduled game.
