Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women Drop a Close One to Baldwin Wallace

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The women's soccer team played a good game against the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets, but suffered a narrow defeat 1-0 in the end. It was an admirable performance for the GTs, especially in the second half, but they could not find the back of the net to even the score after the Yellow Jackets took the lead in the 58th minute. The women's record now stands at 0-1-1 after their first weekend of play, with Baldwin Wallace sitting at 1-0-0 after winning its season opener.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with BWU showing its willingness to let shots fly from all areas of the field. Many were taken, but few found the target, as Geneva senior goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth only had to save four of the ten shots the Yellow Jackets took in the first half. The Golden Tornadoes had two chances themselves, with senior Olivia Anson and sophomore Abby Stover each putting shots on target in the first five minutes of the match, but the first frame came to a close with the score sitting at 0-0.

Baldwin Wallace came out swinging again in the second half, and this time it paid off, with Syndey Rice banging a shot in off the far post by way of an indirect free kick play in the 58th minute. Geneva adjusted well, mixing up their formation to create more opportunities in the attacking end, but the women could not even the score before the final whistle blew. Junior Emily Garvin had a couple of nice attempts in the last 20 minutes but nothing got past the BWU keeper.

The GTs led Baldwin Wallace in shots on goal, 7-6, despite being outshot overall 26-9. Garvin and senior Saige Musser each tallied two shots on goal apiece. Farnsworth finished the match with five saves.

Geneva goes on the road for the first time this season next week, with a match against Alfred on Tuesday, Sep. 3 at 4:00 pm, and then at Oberlin on Saturday, Sep. 7.
