Women’s Soccer Edged Out by Alfred

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Geneva College women's soccer team headed out onto the road for the first time this season, traveling north to take on the Alfred College Saxons on Tuesday afternoon.  In what proved to be a very competitive match, Alfred found the net midway through the second half and held off Geneva for a 1-0 victory over the Golden Tornadoes.  Geneva dropped to 0-2-1 on the season.

The first half was a defensive struggle for each team.  Geneva's best chance came in the 21st minute when senior Saige Musser jumped on a loose ball at the end of the box and got a clean look at the goal, but her shot went straight at the keeper, who made the save.  The two teams managed a combined eight shots in the first half, but just two on frame.

The Golden Tornadoes almost broke through five minutes into the second half.  Geneva earned a corner kick, which Musser sent well into the middle of the Alfred box.  Junior Anna Ulmer got her head to the ball first and put forth a strong shot at the goal, but the ball slammed off the crossbar and back out, keeping the game scoreless.

Seven minutes later, Alfred earned a corner kick, and the Saxons took advantage.  A well taken corner sent to the back post was tapped in by Evony Diaz in the 58th minute, and that proved to be the only goal of the game.  Geneva pushed hard over the final 15 minutes but couldn't find the equalizer before falling, 1-0.

Alfred finished the contest with a 13-9 edge in shots, with Musser posting four of those Geneva shots, while the Golden Tornadoes held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.  Senior goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth made six saves in net.

The women will play their second straight road match on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Oberlin for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
