OBERLIN, Ohio – The Geneva College women's soccer team got off to a great start in its road match at Oberlin on Saturday afternoon, scoring an early goal to give the Golden Tornadoes a quick lead, but the Yeowomen battled back to secure the 3-1 victory.
Four minutes into the match, the Golden Tornadoes earned a free kick 35 yards from goal. Sophomore Noelle Beare took the kick and sent ball into the box that floated just over the Oberlin keeper's fingertips, who seemed to misread the kick, and into the net to give the Golden Tornadoes an early lead.
However, ten minutes later Oberlin used the counterattack to pull even, quickly countering a deep Geneva throw-in and sending the ball up the field. Heather Benway ran onto a ball over the top and drove in and scored past senior goalkeeper Jade Farnsworth to pull level with Geneva.
Both teams had chances over the final 30 minutes of the half, but the game went into the break still even at 1-1.
Oberlin took its first lead of the game ten minutes into the second half off a Geneva turnover deep in their own end. Sophia Timm-Blow intercepted a pass and sent a 25-yard shot off the inside of the far post and into the net.
Twenty minutes later, Oberlin used another counterattack to double its lead by squeaking a shot, off the foot of Tacha Lee, just past Farnsworth to give the Yeowomen a 3-1 lead. Geneva had chances late to get back into the match, but the women couldn't find the back of the net.
Oberlin held a slim 23-22 edge in shots, while Geneva held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal. Oberlin held a 7-6 edge in corner kicks in the fairly evenly contested match.
The women will try to break into the win column next Tuesday when they host La Roche at 7:00 p.m. on Reeves Field
