BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – New Geneva College women's soccer head coach Micah Fitz got to taste victory for the first time at the helm of the program on Tuesday night, and there wasn't any drama involved in the win. The Golden Tornadoes burst out of the gate in the opening minutes, scoring three early goals en route to an impressive 4-0 victory over visiting La Roche. The win improves Geneva's early season record to 1-3-1.
The women came into the game looking for an offensive spark, and they could not have asked for a better start, thanks to the play of seniors Olivia Anson and Saige Musser. Musser, in particular, was in the heart of the attack all night long for the Golden Tornadoes as La Roche had no answers for her speed down the wings.
Just over two minutes into the game, Musser found space down the left side and beat her defender around the edge, putting a perfect cross to the feet of Anson, and Anson easily slotted the ball into the net from three yards away at the near post to give Geneva an early lead.
Eight minutes later, the pair added a second goal in identical fashion, with Musser using her speed to break behind the La Roche defense out on the wing, and her cross into the middle of the box found Anson alone again, and Anson easily added her second goal of the night just ten minutes into the match.
It took Musser just a little over a minute to score again, this time with the senior speedster doing the work herself. Instead of crossing the ball through the box, she cut back across the box after her outside run and sent a high curling shot that La Roche's goalkeeper got her fingers to but was unable to keep out of the net. And with just over eleven minutes of game action off the clock, Geneva led 3-0.
La Roche adjusted their backline alignment at that point to try to limit Musser's space and touches, and it proved effective as the game settled down some for the Redhawks, though La Roche was unable to manage any significant possession or threats to Geneva's goal. Fitz used the big cushion to give his reserves some extended playing time in the first half as the two teams headed into the break without any further scoring.
Geneva reinserted its starters at the beginning of the second, and the Golden Tornadoes once again created several dangerous chances. Anson had a great shot at a hat trick when she got in behind the defense, but her shot was saved by the Redhawks' keeper. Junior Emily Garvin, who played up top compared to her usual role in central defense, also had several chances that narrowly missed. Musser finally found the back of the net again in the 66th minute, making a 70-yard run through the middle of the field, dribbling around the last central defender and into the box, cleanly rocketing a ball inside the far post to wrap up the scoring.
Musser's goal was the end of almost every starter's night for the Golden Tornadoes, as the reserves played well in finishing out the game without allowing La Roche a single dangerous scoring chance, wrapping up the final score of 4-0.
The final stats showed the domination the Golden Tornadoes put forth. Geneva finished with an impressive 27-2 advantage in shots, including a 13-0 advantage in shots on goal. Farnsworth didn't need to make a save in earning her first shutout of the season. Musser finished the night with two goals and two assists, while Anson added a brace herself with two goals. Garvin led the team with five shots total.
The women will head back out on the road after their brief home reprieve. Geneva is in the midst of five road matches out of six, with the Golden Tornadoes playing their next three contest away from Reeves Field. In fact, the women won't be back home until they host Westminster on Homecoming on Saturday, September 28.
