Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Dunda’s Goal in Opening Seconds Highlights Another Shutout Win for Men

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Junior Wil Dunda scored a goal just 21 seconds into the match on Saturday afternoon, and Geneva's men's soccer team retained the lead for the rest of the way against Muskingum, winning 2-0. The Golden Tornadoes played high-quality soccer yet again to give them the second-best start to a season in program history, behind only the 1997 squad that began the year on a 12-game win streak. This year's GTs remain undefeated, moving up to 6-0-1 on the year as they head into Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play next week.

The men had control of the match right from the opening whistle, as a well-worked play off the kickoff sent senior Dominic Sambuco into space down the left sideline. Sambuco delivered a perfectly-placed cross into the box, where the waiting Dunda calmly knocked the ball in for a goal with just 21 ticks off the clock. Geneva's attack slowed down some after the early goal, and the defense remained stout as the Muskies did not attempt a shot on goal in the first half.

The Golden Tornadoes put together a couple of nice attacking plays early in the second frame, with senior Carnel Kerr having a decent look just inside the box that he just pushed too high. Nine minutes after that, a Geneva corner kick gave the men an opportunity to score again, with senior Kyle Lapoure making a diving header that sent the ball off the left post before being cleared out by the Muskingum defense.

The match changed entirely just a couple of minutes later, as junior George Cottenden found himself with nothing but open grass between him and the Muskie goalkeeper after he intercepted a pass from Muskingum. The keeper came out to challenge Cottenden, fouling him in the process, and was issued a red card for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Up a goal and a man, The GTs were able to take advantage of their greater numbers in the 69th minute when freshman Luke Main delivered a rocket from just above the 18-yard line to increase the Geneva lead to 2-0. Sambuco was credited with his second assist of the match.

Geneva outshot Muskingum 17-9 in the win, including 6-0 in shots on goal. Senior Haydn Catalon got the start in net once again for the men and recorded his fourth shutout of the season.

PAC play begins next week, with the Golden Tornadoes travelling down to Washington and Jefferson on Wednesday for their first conference match of the season, slated to begin at 7:30. They will then return to Beaver Falls for their Homecoming match against Westminster on Saturday, also at 7:30.
