WASHINGTON, Pa. – Geneva College's men's soccer team clearly had the upper hand against Washington and Jefferson College in their match on Tuesday, but the contest ended in a 0-0 draw. Despite creating several goal-scoring opportunities in the second half, the Golden Tornadoes were not able to break the tie before the final whistle sounded. They remain undefeated to start the season, posting a 6-0-2 overall record thus far, 0-0-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while W&J's record now reads 3-4-1 overall, 0-0-1 in the conference.
The match started off fairly evenly, with neither side attempting a shot until the 18
th minute. At that point, however, Geneva began to control the match in all phases, putting three shots on target between the 18
th and 26
th minutes without allowing the Presidents to respond. Those three shots would be the only ones either side took in the first 45 minutes, and the halftime break began with the score still knotted at zero.
Junior
Gabe Singh had one of Geneva's best chances of the night in the 51
st minute when he got behind the defense after a nice run down the right side took him into the box. Singh's shot went low and toward the near post, but W&J's keeper remained strong for the save. Just six minutes later, junior
George Cottenden attempted a shot from the top of the box that the President keeper had to dive for, knocking it down out of the air before corralling the loose ball.
Geneva had several more opportunities through the rest of the second half, but a combination of solid defense from W&J and some bad breaks for the GTs kept the men from scoring before the final whistle blew. Geneva's back line remained stout through the entire match, allowing just one shot attempt from the Presidents that did not hit the target.
The GTs outshot W&J 14-1 in the draw, including an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal. Cottenden finished the match with five total shots, two on goal, while freshman
Luke Main took three shots in total and placed two on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Haydn Catalon once again got the start in net, recording his fifth shutout of the season.
Geneva is back home this Saturday, September 28
th, for Homecoming. The men kick off their match against Westminster at 7:30 PM.
