Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Continues Shutout Streak with Homecoming Victory over Westminster

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It's been quite the defensive shutout streak for the Geneva College men's soccer, who added another clean sheet to their season totals on Saturday night in a 2-0 victory over Westminster on Reeves Field to wrap up Homecoming.  This marks the fifth straight shutout the Golden Tornadoes have posted, and even more remarkably they haven't even allowed a shot on goal over that five-match stretch.  Geneva stays undefeated on the year and improves its record to 7-0-2 on the year, 1-0-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).

Westminster took a very defensive posture early on, bunkering in and trying to keep things away from its net while looking for counter opportunities.  While the first half was played almost exclusively on Westminster's side of the field, the Titans were successful in limiting Geneva's chances, though they never managed to threaten the Geneva goal.  The game went into the halftime break scoreless with the Golden Tornadoes holding a 5-0 edge in shots.

Geneva finally broke through in the 62nd minute off a wonderful strike by junior Gabe Singh.  Singh received a pass from junior Wil Dunda near the out-of-bounds line at the corner of Westminster's box, paused, and then made a run past two Westminster defenders along the top of the box.  As he reached the center of the field, he hit a left-footed curling shot from 20 yards away that went into the far upper corner, leaving Westminster's goalkeeper Noah Wolford no chance to stop it.  Singh's goal brought the big Homecoming crowd to their feet, which included many of the 1994 Geneva men's soccer team that was celebrated on the 30-year anniversary of their National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship.

The men put the game away with just under eight minutes remaining.  Senior Dominic Sambuco, the reigning PAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, stole a ball at the corner of the Westminster box and sent a ball to the back post that junior George Cottenden headed back across the net.  The ball may have been headed into the net already, but senior Carnel Kerr was there to make sure it crossed the line and poked it into the goal.  That sealed the victory for the men, 2-0.

Geneva finished with another dominant edge in shots, leading the Titans 15-3 and 6-0 in shots on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Haydn Catalon was the beneficiary again of another strong defensive performance in front of him, and he picked up his sixth shutout of the season, which ties him for the lead in all of NCAA Division III.

The victory sets up a huge showdown for the men on Wednesday evening when Geneva travels north to Grove City to take on the Wolverines at 7:00 p.m.  The winner will take a big advantage in the race to the top seed for the PAC playoffs next month.
