TIFFIN, Ohio – The Geneva College women's soccer team faced a tough task on Saturday afternoon, facing a talented Heidelberg squad that just knocked off Westminster by two goals earlier this week, and doing so without multiple key players who were out with injury. The Golden Tornadoes put together a valiant effort, and junior Emily Garvin's goal late in the game was a highlight as Geneva lost 3-1. Heidelberg improved to 5-1-1 with the win, while Geneva dropped to 1-5-1 as it prepares for conference play starting next week.
Heidelberg got on the board in the 19th when the Student Princes sent a ball over the top of the Geneva defense that Brianna Braatz got to first, putting her in on goal, and she scored to put the Golden Tornadoes behind early. The Geneva defense held Heidelberg off the board for the rest of the half and went into the break trailing by one goal.
Heidelberg took control of the game midway through the second half, scoring twice in an eight-minute sequence on goals from Caitlyn Cross and Braatz.
Geneva broke through in the 84th minute when sophomore Madalyn Fales sent a beautiful through-ball in behind the Heidelberg defense that Garvin ran onto, and she calmly slotted the ball past the Heidelberg keeper to give Garvin her first career goal.
Heidelberg finished the game with an 11-5 edge in shots, though both teams were even at 5-5 in shots on goal. The Student Princes also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Geneva wrapped up its non-conference schedule with today's match and will begin Presidents' Athletic Conference play at Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday night, with kickoff slated for 5:30 p.m. The match will wrap up a stretch of five road games in six matches for the Golden Tornadoes.
