WASHINGTON, Pa. – Geneva's women's soccer team played Washington and Jefferson very closely for most of their match on Wednesday, but ultimately fell short to the Presidents in the conference opener, 2-1. Junior
Emily Garvin scored her second goal in as many matches, but the women could not find the net a second time to tie the score late. Geneva's record falls to 1-6-1 on the season, 0-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while W&J moves up to 4-3-1, 1-0 in the PAC.
Geneva played a very defensive first 20 minutes, dropping back to protect senior goalkeeper
Jade Farnsworth. The Presidents maintained a fairly constant pressure on the GTs' back line, however, and in the 18
th minute they took a 1-0 lead on a shot into the left side of the net. The women began to bring the ball downfield a little bit more at that point, and were able to conjure some opportunities late in the half, with sophomore
Noelle Beare attempting a few shots from deep. Unfortunately, W&J knocked in another goal just four minutes before the halftime whistle, and Geneva went into the break down 2-0.
The Golden Tornadoes were able to put their first shot on target just two minutes into the second half when Garvin took a shot from distance that the W&J keeper had to pick out of the air. That momentum continued, as Geneva took another shot and won two corner kicks over the next 11 minutes. Then, in the 60
th minute, senior
Olivia Anson won a loose ball just inside the Presidents' box. She took it to the end line before nudging a pass Garvin, who was waiting in the middle to blast the ball into the back of the net. Anson was credited with the assist on the goal.
Unfortunately, the women could not muster a second goal before the end of the half, although sophomore
Abby Stover had a nice header that was saved by the Presidents' keeper late in the contest. The Golden Tornadoes ended up dropping the match 2-1.
W&J led the GTs in both shots (21-12) and shots on goal (6-3), but Geneva had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Farnsworth made four saves in the loss.
The women return home to take on Westminster in their homecoming game this Saturday, September 28. Kickoff is slated for 11:00 AM.
