BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva's women's soccer team found tough sledding against a very good Westminster squad today, losing to the Titans 5-1. After a slow start, the women were able to pick things up in the second half, with senior
Olivia Anson scoring a goal, but that would prove to be the lone highlight for the women in the loss. After the match, Geneva's record now sits at 1-7-1, 0-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play.
Although Westminster was favored entering the match, the two sides played a fairly even first 20 minutes, with Geneva's defense able to keep the Titans at bay. That changed in the 24
th minute, however, when Natalie Vilchek put the visitors on the board with a nice goal into the top left corner. That opened the floodgates, and Westminster scored twice more before the half ended to go into the break with a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Tornadoes opened the second half with a much clearer commitment to getting the ball up the field, with junior
Emily Garvin's shot attempt in the 49
th minute the first real opportunity the women had had all day. Westminster made the score 4-0 in the 61
st minute with a goal by Jocelyn Gratchic, but Anson responded with her goal just five minutes later. Sophomore
Noelle Beare delivered a well-placed corner kick into the back half of the box, and Anson drove the ball home with a powerful header into the top part of the goal. Geneva put together a few more opportunities over the next several minutes but could not score a second time, and after Westminster scored once more the match ended with the Titans in front 5-1.
Geneva was outshot 22-9 in the match, 9-4 in shots on goal. However, each side took an even eight shots each in the second half, illustrating the difference between the two periods of play for the GTs. Senior
Jade Farnsworth got the start in goal and made four saves.
The women head on the road next week, facing Grove City for a 4:30 PM match on Wednesday, October 2
nd, before going up to Allegheny for a 4:00 PM match on Saturday.
