Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Uses Offensive Outburst to Defeat Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Geneva women's soccer team had scored five goals all season heading into Saturday's match with Bethany College. They matched that total against the Bison, gaining a 5-1 victory on the road behind a very balanced offensive attack, with five different players entering the scoring column. Following the victory, Geneva's record stands at 4-5-4 overall, 3-2-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Bethany drops to 1-10 overall, a winless 0-6 in the PAC.

It didn't take long at all for the women to score their first goal. A failed Bethany clearance in the fifth minute ended up at the feet of junior Noelle Beare in the middle of the field, and she played the ball in to junior Renae Mohrbacher, who was sitting just a few feet above the 18-yard line. Mohrbacher received the pass, made a defender miss by stepping to her right, and then launched a shot from the edge of the box that made it past the diving keeper and into the goal.

After a back-and-forth half of play in which Bethany recorded multiple shot attempts but nothing to show for it, the Golden Tornadoes managed to put one more in the net before the halftime whistle. In the 44th minute, junior Madalyn Fales gained possession of the ball just past midfield and played a beautiful ball through the Bison backline for junior Abby Stover to run onto. Stover got to it, dribbled into the box, and lofted a perfect shot over top of the goalkeeper's head to double Geneva's advantage.

The GTs picked up right where they left off in the second half, with freshman Julia DiFilippantonio scoring off an assist by Mohrbacher in the 58th minute. Just ten minutes later, Geneva won a corner kick, and after the in-swinging pass bounced around the box for a few seconds Fales managed to push the ball into the middle of the box, where freshman Erin Hope drove it home for a goal.

Geneva's final goal came in the 80th minute, when freshman Bella Carlini found herself with space after being played ahead of the back line. She calmly dribbled into the box and chipped a nice shot over the keeper's head, making the score 5-0. Bethany got one goal back on a late penalty kick, but by then it was too late, as the GTs coasted the rest of the way to a 5-1 victory.

The Bison actually outshot Geneva over the course of the match, 20-9, but the Golden Tornadoes were much more efficient with their chances. Seven of Geneva's nine shots were on target, with five of those hitting the back of the net. Bethany managed eight shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster was excellent in net once again for the Golden Tornadoes, making six saves in 78 minutes without allowing a goal. She was replaced by fellow freshman Emma George for the final 12 minutes of action, once the match was beyond doubt. Fales was credited with two assists in the victory.

Geneva's next match is a home tilt against Thiel on Tuesday, October 14th, at 7:00 p.m. The women will try to make it two wins in a row against the Tomcats.
