BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Junior Renae Mohrbacher scored early in the second half to send the Geneva women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Thiel in a game the Golden Tornadoes dominated from start to finish but couldn't convert any of their chances beyond Mohrbacher's goal. Geneva improved to 5-5-4 overall, 4-2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). This is the women's best start in conference play since 2018 when the Golden Tornadoes started 5-2 in PAC action.
Geneva controlled the play all night against a Thiel squad that was looking for its first win of the season. Despite a number of chances, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't convert. Junior Abby Stover had her shot cleared off the line by a Tomcat defender in the 41st minute, and the two teams went into the break scoreless despite Geneva holding a 15-1 advantage in shots.
The second half was more of the same, and the women finally broke through in the 49th minute, courtesy Mohrbacher. She received a pass from freshman Cassidy Stopchick near the corner of the box, turned and then sent a shot over the hands of Thiel goalkeeper Madison Rodgers and into the net.
Geneva continued to pepper the Tomcat net over the final 40 minutes, looking for a second goal to give the Golden Tornadoes some breathing room, but the additional goal never came. The Geneva defense made sure Mohrbacher's goal stood up, though, and freshman Emma George, making her first collegiate start, earned the shutout without having to make a save.
Geneva finished with a 36-1 advantage in shots, including 17-0 in shots on goal. The women also had a 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Mohrbacher was particularly active offensively, playing all 90 minutes while finishing with 14 shots, eight on goal.
The women return to action on Saturday for an important PAC match at Hiram, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes have just four regular season matches left and are battling for one of the six playoff spots for the upcoming PAC Playoffs that start in a little over two weeks.
