Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women Win Third Straight Behind Mohrbacher’s Late Goal

HIRAM, Ohio – Junior Renae Mohrbacher played the hero once again for the Geneva women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, scoring a goal late in the second half to send Geneva to victory on the road at Hiram College. It is the third consecutive win for the Golden Tornadoes, the first time the program has accomplished that since 2019. Head coach Micah Fitz has pulled the right strings to boost Geneva to an excellent 5-2-1 record in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, 6-5-4 overall. Hiram, on the flip side, falls to 5-10 overall, 2-6 in the PAC.

This was the first match between Geneva and Hiram since the latter became a member of the PAC this past summer, and it appeared in the first half as though the Terriers may have had the upper hand. A Hiram shot just four minutes into the match forced a save by freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster, but the hosts could not convert on the ensuing corner kick. Geneva managed multiple shots over the next ten minutes or so, but nothing to challenge the Hiram keeper, and both defenses locked down for the remainder of the half, resulting in a 0-0 tie at the break.

The Terriers had the better part of the possession to start the second half, with Foster needing to make three saves over the span of three minutes early in the frame. Hiram could not break through, however, and Geneva flipped the script on them in the 73rd minute. The women won a corner kick after freshman Cassidy Stopchick had her shot deflected out wide, and the corner was crossed into the box, finding senior Anna Ulmer. Ulmer used her head to redirect the ball toward the net, but it was stopped for the moment by the Hiram defense. The ball fell toward Mohrbacher, and she coolly punched it in to give Geneva the advantage. The GTs controlled the match from then on, keeping the lead all the way for a 1-0 victory.

Mohrbacher's goal was the only shot on target for the GTs all match long, although the women tied with Hiram in total shots, 10-10. Foster made five saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season. That total ties her for third in program history for most shutouts in a single season.

The Golden Tornadoes have just three matches remaining in PAC play, all against solid opponents. They will try to make it four wins in a row on Wednesday, October 22nd, when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Chatham in a 5:00 p.m. match.
