PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on a cool and windy Wednesday evening at Chatham. The Cougars took an early lead and led from start to finish in the 3-0 Chatham win as the Golden Tornadoes were without a couple regular starters and a key reserve due to injury. The loss dropped Geneva's record to 6-6-4 overall, 5-3-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Things started poorly for the women when a shot by Chatham four minutes into the game went off the diving fingertips of freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster and right to Chatham's Ainsley Smith, who tapped the rebound into the net to put Geneva in an early hole.
Chatham added a second goal less than eight minutes later when Chatham's Halle Marsalis got behind the defense. Foster made a great save on the initial shot, but Marsalis collected the rebound and scored to double the Cougars' lead.
The Golden Tornadoes settled down after the early pair of Chatham goals, but Geneva couldn't cut into the deficit as the Cougars maintained their two-goal lead at the break.
Similar to the first half, Chatham found the net early in the second half when the Cougars were awarded a penalty kick three minutes after the break, and Marsalis converted to increase Chatham's lead to 3-0. This was the first time Geneva had allowed more than two goals in a PAC match this season.
That early second half goal was the final score of the game. The Golden Tornadoes almost found the net in the closing minutes, but freshman Ruth Bartley's header off a corner kick was cleared off the line, keeping Geneva off the board.
Chatham finished the game with a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. Junior Renae Mohrbacher led the women with four shots total. Foster made ten saves to keep even more goals off the board.
Geneva now looks ahead to Saturday's final home match of the season when the women host Waynesburg at 11:00 a.m. on Homecoming, which will also be Senior Day. The Golden Tornadoes have just two regular season matches left this year and will probably need to win one of them in order to qualify for the PAC playoffs.
