Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Can’t Overcome Early Deficit on Senior Day

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – For the second straight match, the Geneva women's soccer team fell behind in the first five minutes, and the GTs could not climb out of the early hole before falling to Waynesburg University on Saturday morning, 2-0. The women played the Yellow Jackets tough for the majority of the match, but the visitors' two goals in the opening ten minutes proved to be the difference. Geneva's record slips to 6-7-4 overall, 5-4-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Waynesburg remains undefeated in the PAC with an 8-0-2 record, 14-1-2 overall.

After taking a few moments to celebrate the two seniors on this year's team, Anna Ulmer and Olivia Reath, the Golden Tornadoes were set to take on Waynesburg on a beautiful morning for Geneva's Homecoming. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets played spoiler right off the bat, scoring a goal off of a rebounded shot attempt in just the second minute of play. The GTs' defense struggled to keep the visitors at bay over the next several minutes, and Waynesburg doubled its advantage in the 11th minute on a nice passing sequence up the left flank, with Julz Mohrbacher getting credited with the goal.

Geneva's defense tightened up after that opening lapse, but the damage was done. The GTs managed just one shot on goal for the rest of the half, and Waynesburg led 2-0 at the break.

Things were more even to start the second frame, although the Yellow Jackets continued to push Geneva's back line, earning three corner kicks early in the half. A couple of diving stops by freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster kept the Golden Tornadoes in the match, and then the women had their best chance of the contest in the 72nd minute. Junior Abby Stover ran onto a through ball played into the box, and with pressure on her right side managed to poke the ball in on goal. Unfortunately, Waynesburg keeper Lex Greenlief was there to make the save, and Geneva never threatened for the remainder of the match.

Waynesburg outshot the GTs 21-8 over the course of the match, earning ten corner kicks to Geneva's zero. Junior Renae Mohrbacher registered four shots for Geneva, two on goal, with Foster making six saves. Miracle Hershey and Julz Mohrbacher were the goal-scorers for Waynesburg.

Geneva's final match of the regular season comes on Wednesday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Franciscan University for a 5:00 p.m. match with the Barons. The winner of that match will likely earn the final PAC playoff spot. Geneva has made the PAC playoffs just once since joining the conference 15 years ago, losing in the quarterfinals in 2021.
