Women’s Soccer Falls Inches Short of Playoff Berth

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – Needing a victory at Franciscan University tonight to clinch a spot in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs, the Geneva women's soccer team could not find a go-ahead goal, finishing the match in a 0-0 draw with the Barons. A beautiful shot by junior Renae Mohrbacher in the second half nearly gave the women the advantage, but it hit the post and was cleared before Geneva could take the lead. The women finish the season with an overall record of 6-7-5, 5-4-2 in PAC play. It is their best conference record since 2018.

Franciscan controlled most of the play in the first half, but despite having the ball for much of the time the Barons did not muster many shots, with Geneva freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster saving the only shot on goal from either side in the first 20 minutes. A run by junior Abby Stover down the left side nearly led to a goal-scoring opportunity for the GTs, but nothing came of it in the end and the two sides went into the break goalless.

The Golden Tornadoes came into the second half with more urgency, knowing they needed to score, and Mohrbacher nearly came through in the 63rd minute. Senior Anna Ulmer sent a long ball toward the top of the box on a free kick, and it fell to the turf and bounced past the Franciscan defense. Mohrbacher got a foot to the ball, pushing it past the Baron keeper, but it hit off the right post before getting cleared by Franciscan. Stover placed one more shot on target in in the 71st minute, but Geneva didn't have a great look at the goal after that, and the game ended without either side scoring.

Foster made six saves in net for the GTs en route to posting her eighth shutout of the season. Those eight clean sheets are the third-most by a goalkeeper in a single season in program history. As a team, Geneva took seven shots to Franciscan's ten.

The draw brings to an end an exciting season for the women, who were voted to finish tenth in the PAC preseason poll back in August. They more than exceeded those expectations, battling for a playoff spot all season long while consistently starting six freshman over the course of the year. Head coach Micah Fitz has put his program in a good position to make another playoff push next season, with several underclassmen providing valuable minutes for the team this year.
