LATROBE, Pa. – There were a couple of good stretches for the Geneva women's volleyball team in Saturday's match against Saint Vincent, but the GTs could not put it all together for a victory, falling to the Bearcats in three sets (16-25, 22-25, 22-25). The women struggled toward the end of each set, resulting in a frustrating loss despite being competitive for the better part of each set. With the loss, their record falls to 4-17 on the year, 1-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent moves up to 5-9 overall, an even 4-4 in PAC competition.
Senior
Emily Nelson began the first set on a tear for Geneva, notching three consecutive kills to put the women in front, 4-2. Saint Vincent quickly regained the lead, 8-7, but the Golden Tornadoes were able to stick right with them for the next few minutes. Unfortunately, a 9-1 run by the Bearcats to go in front 20-13 put things out of reach for Geneva, and Saint Vincent won the set 25-16.
There was not much to separate the two sides early in set two, until the Golden Tornadoes used a 5-1 run to take a 14-10 lead behind a couple of kills from junior
Daphne Alexander. The Bearcats recovered though, going on a 7-1 run of their own to regain the advantage. They controlled the set from then on, winning it 25-22.
The teams went back-and-forth to start the third set, with each side trading short runs for the first several minutes. The Bearcats would go ahead by four or five points, and then Geneva would pull right back within one. Unfortunately, the Golden Tornadoes were never able to tie the set after falling behind early, and Saint Vincent gradually pulled away for the 25-22 victory despite three late kills by freshman
Rachel Baird.
Nelson finished with eight kills in the loss, tying for the team-lead with junior
Katie Seboe, who hit .182 across the three sets. Sophomore
Laura Goonewardene handled the setting duties, totaling 27 assists, while senior
Heather Seubert paced the defense with 21 digs. Nelson and Goonewardene posted 13 and 10 kills, respectively, with Goonewardene notching three blocks as well.
The women are home again next week, facing off against Thiel on Wednesday, October 15
th, at 7:00 p.m. The Tomcats are 7-1 in PAC play and one of the best teams in the conference.
